Levels of Individual & Societal Consciousness

This chart combines Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, Spiral Dynamics (credit: Clare Graves, Don Beck, and Chris Cowan) and Integral Theory (credit: Ken Wilber – the “Einstein of Consciousness”). By separating the levels of human consciousness into “memes,” the chart provides a map of the vast and varied world views that exist within the human condition at the start of the Fifth Spiritual Paradigm.

The chart should be read bottom-up: The first column shows that progression up the Spectrum proceeds in alternating “I” to “We” states (i.e., living more for the benefit of oneself vs. the benefit of a group). The six First Tier memes are “subsistence level” stages of development and occur before the Tipping Point – a critical milestone – after which integration occurs.

Once Second Tier consciousness is achieved, it becomes truly possible to build a new world that works for everyone. The three Second Tier memes represent a tremendous achievement: a mastering of fear, ego, and material reward … all for the betterment of Humanity. Second Tier consciousness is quite rare, as shown in the “Percent Global Populace” column. The “Percent U.S. Power” column is an estimate of how vigorously each meme is affecting policy decisions in the Unites States (e.g.: government officials, judges, school board members, captains of industry). Please note that the last two columns represent meme percentages in the U.S. only (i.e., the Level 6 meme is more prevalent in Europe, and the Level 3 meme is more common in the Middle East and Africa).
